2023 건축도자재료연구워크숍 결과전시 《3》은 지난 8월 말부터 9월 말까지 클레이아크김해미술관 세라믹창작센터에서 진행된 <지속가능한 건축도자 재료연구>의 결과물을 선보이는 전시로,
참여작가 ROS(심다은, 최솔이, 정김도원)의 개인과 사회 그리고 자연의 세 꼭짓점을 잇는 시도를
보여주는 작품 33점을 소개한다.
전시의 토대가 되는 워크숍은 자연에서 온 흙을 굽고 유약을 바르면 영원히 썩지 않는 산업폐기물이 된다는 문제에 주목, 이를 해결할 수 있는 방안을 모색하고자 마련되었다. ‘기후위기’, ‘환경 오염’에 대해 작품의 시작인 ‘재료’부터 친환경적인 것으로 하나씩 바꿔 나갈 수 있도록 하고, 이 를 통해 환경 위기 시대의 대안을 제시하고자 하는 작가들의 생각이 담겨있다.
이번 워크숍과 전시에 참여한 콜렉티브 그룹 ROS의 멤버인 심다은, 최솔이, 정김도원 작가는 각각 폐목재와 폐시멘트를 이용한 벽돌, 자연 폐기물로 만든 바이오머티리얼 가구, 폐도자를 재사용한 도자 오브제를 제시한다. 작가들의 새로운 시각과 미래지향적 메시지가 담긴 작품을 통해, 우리 모두가 ‘선순환 사회’의 주역이 되고, 더 나은 삶을 위해 적극적으로 변화를 만들고자 실천 하는 마음의 불씨를 가지게 될 수 있기를 희망한다.
심다은은 도시에서 버려진 도자기를 수집하고 분쇄하여 점토와 함께 빚어낸다. 《3》전에서는 도자 파편을 혼합한 점토와 자연물 유약의 소결 데이터를 바탕으로 도시에서 목격한 암석을 재현한다. 풍화된 암석이 도자기를 거쳐 다시 암석으로 돌아가도록 하여 도시에서 생성되고 소멸하는 물질의 가치를 전환하고 영구적 공생의 가능성을 이야기한다.
최솔이는 '재생과 순환'이라는 키워드를 통해 미래 건축 재료 가치에 주목하고, 그 재료로 집을 짓는 사람들의 문화와 정체성에 대해 고민했다. 《3》전에서는 새롭게 '흙 crete'를 선보이며, 건축도자 재료의 잠재성을 공유한다. 폐도자, 폐유리, 폐종이부터 톱밥, 쌀겨 등 다양한 분야에서 발생하는 폐기물을 활용하여 새로운 재질을 발견하는 실험을 진행했다. 이 실험을 통해 주거를 구성하는 공간 요소를 오브제로 만들었고, 관람객에게 작가가 생각하는 미래 공간의 간접 경험을 제공하고자 한다.
정김도원은 임시 조각을 만든다. 자연이나 도시 환경에 남겨진 물질을 결합해서 조각의 구성 요소로 사용한다. 흙이나 점토뿐 아니라 식물, 동물, 박테리아와 균류 같은 생물학적 유기체를 이용해 생성과 소멸의 경계를 모호하게 한다. 《3》전에서는 그가 일시성에 초점을 두고 생성한 대안 물질 바이오머티리얼(Biomaterial)의 잘라낸 일부분을 공유하여 새로운 물질 시스템의 가능성을 공유한다.
“3” is the Final Reports Exhibition of Architectural Ceramic Material Research Workshop showing final outcomes of Research on Sustainable Architectural Ceramics Material from Ceramic Creative Center of Clayarch Gimhae Museum, held from the end of August to the end of September. The exhibition portrays 33 pieces of the artists trio ROS (Daeun Sim, Solyi Choi and Dowon Jungkim), which connect the three vertices of individuals, society and nature.
The workshop, which built the foundation for the exhibition, placed an emphasis on the fact that ceramic material, originally collected from nature then fired and glazed, ends up being industrial wastes, aiming to find solutions. Facing such formidable challenges of “climate crisis” and “environmental pollution”, the exhibition embodies the artists’ ideas to replace the “materials”, the very beginning of creative works, with environment-friendly ones one by one, in order to provide practical alternatives for the era of environmental crisis.
Daeun Sim, Solyi Choi and Dowon Jungkim, members of the collective group ROS and participants of the workshop and the exhibition, display biomaterial furniture pieces of bricks made of recycled wood waste and recycled cement waste, and ceramic objects made of recycled ceramic waste. Through the creative works portraying fresh views and future-oriented messages of the artists, we hope we all actively contribute to forming the society of virtuous circles, and develop enthusiasm for taking proactive actions to make change for a better life for all.
Daeun Sim collects and smashes ceramic wastes from urban neighborhoods, and then mixes it with clay. The artist recreates the rocks she discovered across the city, out of clay mixed with the fragments of ceramic wastes, based on her data collected on how natural glaze works on such clay mix. Placing the weathered rocks in the natural cycle of becoming a ceramic piece and then turning into rocks again, the work discusses possibilities of transforming values of materials produced and discarded in the city and making them coexist with human beings permanently.
Through the keywords of “recycling and circulation”, Solyi Choi focused on the values of future architectural materials and considered cultures and identities of those building their houses with such materials. For this exhibition, she tried a new material “clay-crete” for the first time, sharing the potential of architectural materials. Made of a variety of common wastes from ceramic, glass and paper to sawdust and rice bran, the work went through experiments of discovering new “textures”. Through the experiments making objects resembling spatial elements constituting a house, the artist would like to provide indirect experiences of her conception of a future space.
Dowon Jungkim creates a temporary sculptural installation. Convergence of the wastes left around in nature and urban neighborhoods has been added as elements of the sculpture. In addition to clay and soil, use of materials from biological organisms such as plants, animals and fungi has blurred the boundary between creation and extinction. The work in this exhibition, by sharing a cut- out part of Biomaterial, an alternative material the artist created with focus on temporariness, tries to share the potential of a new material system.
